newborn baby boy with his family

A new baby changes a family- turns couples into parents, only kids into siblings, babies of the family into big brothers or sisters. Pictures of these new relationships in the first weeks are so special, and can capture all the newness, excitement, (along with occasional mixed feelings on kids’ parts), and love for this new little one. Jude was the second baby for this sweet family and the first boy. He weighed in at 9 lbs, 8 oz and was just adorably chunky. Some babies have very definite likes and dislikes, and he was one of them- he didn’t like to be alone. As long as someone was holding him, he was happy as a clam, but being out of someone’s arms was not something he appreciated. So, we went with his preferences for the most part, and did more than usual with family. His sister was so excited to have a little brother, and I love her expressions!

maternity photos among the flowering trees | battle creek maternity pictures

The flowering trees at Leila Arboretum couldn’t have been a more perfect backdrop to this gorgeous mom-to-be’s maternity pictures. It was a beautiful evening, too- sunny and mild, so it really felt just like we were taking a lovely evening walk together. They’re expecting their first baby, a girl, in about 6 weeks, again making the pink and white flowers an ideal part of the session. Heaven!

ethan | battle creek newborn

Ethan’s pictures are being treasured almost 8000 miles away from his Battle Creek home. His grandparents live in Burma, and hadn’t been able to visit yet, so I know they’re appreciating his pictures even more than grandparents usually do. His parents have been in the U.S. less than a decade, and it’s always hard to be apart from family at special times like these. Luckily, they do have siblings in Battle Creek, and one niece is especially close to them. She was able to be part of the session, too, and I know she’s going to act as a big sister to Ethan. She’s very comfortable with him already!

fresh 48 newborn photo session | in-hospital newborn pictures

A fresh 48 newborn photo session takes place right in the hospital, within the first day or two after your baby is born. Imagine capturing all those firsts- meeting siblings for the first time, first bath, first outfit…  The pictures in a fresh 48 newborn photo session are typically less posed and more a ‘slice of life’ or candid. The goal is to capture interactions and emotion- the excitement of meeting this little one you’ve been dreaming about for months, the family who is so eager to see them for the first time and the relationships of a lifetime that are just beginning.

The B. family asked me several months before their baby was born to come to Bronson Hospital after her birth to photograph those first hours, and I jumped at the chance. They had planned it all so well. Her brother was going to be meeting her for the first time, and they set up the meeting so thoughtfully. He had made his sister a card, and she had gotten him a gift to open. It was so sweet to watch him with his new camera, photographing ‘his’ baby.

First, the little details- the wrinkled and flaky skin, tiny toes, silky hair-

Doesn’t he look smitten?!fresh 48 newborn photo session meeting big brotherI loved doing this fresh 48 newborn photo session so much that I’ve decided to start offering them as an add-on to newborn pictures. The timing is a bit tricky, so to be sure I will be able to be at the hospital during the hours when your baby is first born, I’ll only be taking 2 a month. If you’d like pictures of your baby in that first day or two of life, documenting all the little details and the excitement of your family and friends, contact me for more details. I’d love to help you capture all that freshness, too!

aidan | a flowery spring newborn photo session

A flowery spring newborn photo session was such a refreshing treat after the long winter and late spring we’ve had in Michigan. Aidan’s mom is seriously stylish, and when she offered to provide flowers for the photo session, I was thrilled. (Side note- if you’re in the Kalamazoo area, Trader Joe’s is a fantastic source for a great selection of very fresh flowers at affordable prices) She arranged them for me in several different creative ways, and they made a lovely setting. There’s just something so perfect about the freshness of a newborn baby combined with fresh flowers.flowery spring newborn photo session
