Where will my session take place?
Sessions will take place either in your home or in an outdoor setting of your choosing. Beaches, downtown areas, parks and fields are some popular options. For more information, please see the Session page.
When should I schedule my session?
Newborns: The best time for newborn photos is around one or two weeks of age. Try to schedule your newborn session about 3-4 months in advance to secure your spot.
Maternity: Many moms find that between 32 and 34 weeks is a great time to schedule a maternity session. At this point in your pregnancy, you’re beautifully curved but still able to move around comfortably.
Families: Most families can schedule their session 2-3 weeks in advance. Fall is the busiest season and fills up quickly, so consider booking earlier for a session during that time.
What should we wear?
Newborns: Since clothing doesn’t fit too well at this stage, photographing your newborn naked or in just a wrap or diaper cover produces the best results.
See this blog post for tips on what parents should wear for newborn photos.
Maternity: Wear fitted clothing to show off your belly bump. After booking your session, I’ll send you a clothing list for additional ideas, or you can borrow a few outfits I keep on hand for maternity portraits. You can also opt for a nude maternity shoot – talk to me beforehand so we can arrange the session to make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed.
Families: With kids, the most important thing is to make sure they feel comfortable in what they’re wearing. This will allow them to enjoy the session and just be themselves. If siblings or parents are involved in the shoot, coordinate your clothing rather than getting matching attire (it’s helpful to think of your family’s wardrobe as one big outfit). Consider adding textures or layers, both of which look great in photos. Finally, consider your location – denim, sweaters and boots are great for a session in a field or park, for example.
Do I need to fill out the questionnaire?
Yes. The questionnaire serves two important purposes. The first is that it’s the contract for your session, so be sure to read it over carefully. Second, the questionnaire also helps to ensure that you get the photos you want out of the shoot. Please take the opportunity to tell me all about your kids and their likes and dislikes – this will help ensure that you get exactly what you want in the final images.
