mason | portage mi baby pictures

It’s no secret that I love a bit of whimsy. You’ll often find little stuffed animals or sweet little hats on babies I’ve photographed. Newborns and cute go together like peas and carrots, in my opinion (name that movie!). It’s always a balance between natural baby poses and an addition to an already perfect baby, but in small doses I love what it adds to a session. I thought Mason’s tiny bear was a perfect addition to his curled-up pose in the soft fur-

newborn photos after NICU | baby photos of preemie babies

Newborn photos after NICU stays call for a few precautions, but are definitely possible. A baby’s safety comes first, and it’s important to know if there a baby has any restrictions on poses or activity. If they do, it’s still possible to get beautiful pictures. There are plenty of options! One plus is that parents have had plenty of time to observe and handle their babies. They are experts in their baby’s preferences! Don’t be afraid to tell your photographer what your baby likes and doesn’t like- you know them best.

I come to your home for the newborn session. That’s always a plus with babies who are preemies or have had to spend time in the hospital for other reasons. Staying home means fewer germs to expose them to. I’m always careful to be healthy when photographing babies, and to use hand sanitizer generously. That’s doubly true when doing newborn photos after NICU stays. I worked for years as an RN, so have a good background for working with babies with any health challenges, too.

Miles was a bit early and tiny at birth (3 lbs). He was a bit older than most newborns at the time of his session, but still a newborn in gestational age. He was comfortable in some positions but not others. When I found a position he liked, he rewarded me with this adorable smile-

If your baby has had to spend some time in the NICU, know that newborn pictures are still an option for you! Even though they’re outside the usual time of one to two weeks of age for newborn pictures, it’s still possible to get beautiful pictures of them. If you’d like more information, contact me here. I’d love to talk to you about your baby’s unique needs and help you get newborn photos of them!

twin newborn babies catherine & elizabeth | allegan twin baby photography

Twin newborn babies Catherine & Elizabeth were a joy to photograph. They were 5 weeks old at the time of these pictures. They were a bit early and Catherine had to spend a few weeks in the NICU before coming home. It isn’t easy having twin newborn babies in two different spots (especially not in the middle of a snowy winter!). Elizabeth couldn’t go to the hospital because the chance of exposure to germs there is too great, and Catherine wasn’t quite ready to be home yet. So their reunion here was really special.

Twin newborn babies are often happiest when they’re snuggled together. I wasn’t sure if that would be the case with them, since they had been separated for several weeks. It was still absolutely true, though- if one was whimpering a bit, that stopped the minute she was next to her sister. So sweet!

All newborn photo sessions take place in your home. I have lots of hats, wraps and baskets, and bring a selection of them with me. We talk ahead of time about the colors and poses that you prefer, and I design your session around your preferences. Sessions last about 3 hours. Your family is welcome to be part of the pictures. Sibling pictures and pictures with mom & dad are so important, and I’m always happy when families choose to do those.

Parents of multiples often ask if I charge more for twins or triplets. I don’t- I treat them just the same as a session for a single baby. I take pictures of the babies together, but I also make sure to get individual pictures of each baby. It may take just a bit longer to photograph twin newborn babies, but the results are always worth the extra time!

Adorable six month old Isaiah

I met Isaiah at his newborn session, and he’s only gotten cuter since then. I mean- those big dark eyes, adorable smiles, and his dimples…SO cute! Here’s just a sample of the cuteness at his session-
